Tennis: Poland’s Fręch reaches 2nd round of Italian Open

Poland’s Magdalena Fręch has made it through to the second round of the women’s singles at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome.

The 26-year-old, who is ranked world No. 55 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 7-6, 6-3 in their first-round clash in the Italian capital on Tuesday.

Up next for the Polish qualifier at the clay-court tournament in Rome is third-seeded American Coco Gauff.

Meanwhile, Poland's 51st-ranked Magda Linette is set to face Zhu Lin of China in the first round of the Italian Open on Wednesday.

Polish star Iga Świątek, the world No. 1 in women's tennis, had a bye in the first round and is expected to step on the court in Rome on Thursday.

Świątek won the 2022 Italian Open. She also triumphed in Rome in 2021.

The 2024 Italian Open runs until May 19.
