Tennis: Poland’s Linette through to 2nd round of Italian Open

Poland’s Magda Linette has made it through to the second round of the women’s singles at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, with a straight-set win over Zhu Lin of China.

The 32-year-old Pole, who is ranked world No. 51 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), defeated the 54th-ranked Chinese player 6-3, 6-2 in their first-round clash in the Italian capital on Wednesday.

Up next for Linette at the clay-court tournament in Rome is 24th-seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka.

Meanwhile, Poland’s world No. 1 Iga Świątek is due to play American Bernarda Pera in the second round on Thursday.

Świątek won the 2022 Italian Open. She also triumphed in Rome in 2021.

The 2024 Italian Open runs until May 19.
